I love mixing vintage with current trends across the board, even when it comes to my beauty routine! My best kept secrets are plucked from every generation, from my grandmother to my best friend.  Here are my summer favorites that I highly recommend to any vintage vixen.

Here are some great ways you can bring the beauty of the eighties up to date!

HAIR: Do It Up

Rather than creating your own hole in the ozone layer by using an entire can of hair spray while teasing your hair to the point of breakage, try these slick backed up dos that come off more catwalk than costume.

To get a look like this, snag a ton of bobby pins. Start by dampening your hair with a spray bottle of water. Run a quarter sized amount of pomade through your hair. (My absolute favorite is Joico Creme Wax.)

Pin back the hair on the sides of your head as tightly and smoothly as possible, leaving the hair on top of your head free. Spray each side with a super hold hair spray.

Sweep your bangs up and backward with a comb as high as they will reach, twist the end of your bangs, and pin them to give them volume. Section the hair on top of your head into three parts. Lightly spray each section and lightly tease upward with a comb. Twist and pin the ends of each section toward the back of your head.

Section the remaining hair into small parts on the back of your head and beneath your sides. Take each section and brush it back tightly, pinning it down toward the back of your head, while leaving the longer pieces to fall at the back of your neck, creating a ponytail. Spray and lightly tease the loose pieces in the back, and you're set!

*When working a do like this one, always be sure to bring a few extra bobby pins in your bag so you can pin any stray hairs that could come loose.

EYES: Shock Treatment

Eighties eyes were all about bold and vibrant color. Rather than layering on loads of bright shadow, make your eyes pop highly pigmented liner over each lid in a single thick line.

Vintage Vixen: 60s Eyes in Six Simple Steps

If I could have chosen the era I was born in, I would have chosen the sixties. I would have loved to grow up at a time in fashion when dresses were mini, fringe was in, and every boy dressed like a total babe.

One of my favorite trends from the sixties is eye makeup. Bold lashes, bright white shadow, and thick liner made every girl's gaze pop. With the right cosmetics, you can bring this look back in just six easy steps!

Here's what you need, along with my recommendation of the brands I love best:

Liquid Eyeliner: Make Up For Ever, $22

Mascara: Rimmel Eye Magnifier, $8

White Shadow: Urban Decay Cream Shadow in Moonshine, $17

White Eyeliner: Make Up Forever, $17

Foundation: Max Factor Pan Stik, $9

Step 1: Apply foundation over your eyelids as a base for the shadow.

Step 2: Apply white cream shadow over the foundation.

Step 3: With the liquid liner, line each eyelid as close to the lash line as
possible, starting from the inner corner of your eye to the end. Once
dry, go over the line again, but brush the liner so that the line
becomes thicker as it reaches the outer corner of the eye.

Step 4: Apply mascara. Start at the base of your lashes and slowly
wiggle the wand from side to side so that each lash is heavily
coated. Apply mascara to bottom lashes also.

Step 5: Once dry, apply another heavy coat of mascara. Try to
coat your lashes so some will stick together.

Step 6: Finally, line the inside corner of your eyes with the white
eyeliner to acheive the wide, doe-eyed look that set sixties
beauty apart from the rest!

Code Red

For decades, red lipstick has been the quintessential make-up must have for every glamour girl. From Marilyn Monroe to Gwen Stefani, this look has graced iconically beautiful women in every realm of fashion. When choosing a red, you must first determine which hue works best for your skin tone as well as the style that you wish to achieve.

Here is a list of my personal picks:

NARS lipstick in "Flamenco" is a deeper, berry colored red that is slightly sheer and super easy to wear.

For just a hint of red, Benefit's rose-scented lip and cheek stain called "Benetint" is as sweet and subtle as it smells.

My current red, Rimmel's Moisture Rich Cream Lipstick in "Temptation" is a classic red with a very vintage feel to it. Rimmel is so wonderful as a cosmetic line because their products never fail to make a statement that saves. I picked up my lipstick at Walgreen's for under seven dollars!
